The mechanical environment of the astronaut has been made safer by use of rounded edges of corners, tethering of pull pins, selection and incorporation of fire-resistant materials, and 1/6 G empirical data for tool/handle design.
The safeguards against ordnance, thermal, and topographical hazards, as incorporated in the ALSEP, are also discussed.
