Abstract
Unitization and containerization have wrought very similar revolutions in the steamship and air cargo industries. To ensure continued profitability, mergers are underway and rate changes being sought. Rate making is a real problem calling for radically new approaches. Whatever the rate, however, the shipper will base all his decisions on total cost, which accounts for the capital cost of goods locked in transit.
To Interolsen Agencies, Inc., unit loads offer the lowest total cost. Reasons are manifold but unitization remains the only system offering floor to floor transportation. This is not to say that containers are not here to stay. They are. But it is questioned how long the high capital costs, lack of standardized units, and the high weights of containers can be borne.
