Abstract
Test result determinations for automotive lighting devices subjected to laboratory mechanical tests (dust, moisture, and corrosion) are presently based either on subjective evaluations or on time-consuming photometric measurements. This paper deals with a simplified photometric method that provides a basis for objective and relatively rapid evaluations of mechanical test performance of lighting devices. The method basically involves the use of a light-integrating hemisphere to measure the total light output of a device before and after undergoing a mechanical test. The performance of the device is evaluated by comparing the “before” and “after” measurements and checking the results against allowable degradations set forth in the applicable Federal and SAE mechanical test specifications. Evaluation test results show that the photometric method, as it stands, is suitable for use with the laboratory dust test, but that it requires further study and development before it can be used with moisture or corrosion tests.
