Abstract
The paper narrates the thinking that led to the selection of the basic design of the constant speed drive, explaining the reasons for the choice of the schematic and the various components, such as hydraulic units, differential gears, and governor.
There is a presentation of some configurations which have been produced by scaling and/or rearranging the design without introducing any significant development requirements.
The design has proven to be lighter, to have longer life and is less expensive to operate than previous designs.
This paper is intended to present a design and some of the thinking leading up to that design. The design is a commercial success. Therefore, we suggest that there was some merit in the method of approaching the design problem.
