Abstract
V/STOL aircraft may offer a potential solution to the short-haul losses of commercial airlines. This paper discusses operational and economic characteristics desirable in V/STOL aircraft designed for commercial service over routes of 150 miles or less. Current helicopter cost experience is analyzed and the results of a recent simulation of helicopter operations over a typical short-haul truck line route are reported. V/STOL cost trends are compared with comparable cost trends of fixed-wing aircraft in short-haul commercial service. Economic requirements are discussed and the sensitivity of V/STOL costs to changes in various cost determinants analyzed.
