Abstract
The author reviews briefly the history of the use and development of hitches. Two basic engineering principles discussed are weight equalizing and sway resistance of hitches. Also analyzed are stresses to the car and trailer under varying conditions, as well as developments in hitches to overcome these shortcomings.
In its present state major towing problems have been successfully solved by proper hitch designs. With the correct size hitch for the tongue weight of the trailer properly installed anyone who drives a car can tow a trailer.
