Correlation of Instrumentation with Painted Appearance

Abstract
Definite relationships have been established between the visual appearance of painted surfaces and the surface texture of the underlying sheet metal. The sensitivity of this effect is shown to be quantitatively dependent upon the paint thickness and type of finishing system. It has been further established, for the first time, that a combination of microinch roughness height and peak count readings of surface texture correlate better with final painted appearance of sheet metal panels than does microinch roughness height reading alone. Instrumented measurements of surface texture were also shown to be significantly more meaningful than visual evaluations of bare metal surfaces in correlating with final painted appearance.
