Abstract
The success or failure of a United States supersonic transport program is going to hinge on four fundamental ideas:
-
1.
Proper recognition of the importance of an SST program to the United States. The benefits to the country are considerable and the program is definitely not a giveaway to the industry.
-
2.
Realistic government appraisal of the financial risks involved in development and production, and of the limited capacity of industry to shoulder any appreciable portion of risks of such magnitude. The financial burden is simply too big to be borne by private industry alone.
-
3.
Solving the technical problems in such a way as to increase the economic operating effectiveness of the SST at a competitive initial price.
-
4.
Government willingness in rate and route decisions to set the environment for building the financial strength of the airlines so that they may purchase the SST' without further support.
