Abstract
In the 300–5000 hp output range, there is a need for diesel engines that can be adapted to different fields of use with varying demands as to operation, supervision, and servicing. The demands placed on such an engine, and factors which may affect the results, are analyzed. The extent of development work, as well as a number of both technical and nontechnical problems, are discussed, and an example is given of a new engine which has been constructed with a view to fulfilling these demands.
Details, as to the technical investigations on which these opinions are based have been excluded as far as possible, in order to give the subject the necessary breadth for demonstrating that improvements can be brought about by applying the methods recommended.
