Abstract
Space exploration vehicles of tomorrow demand new land equipment systems to handle, transport, and manipulate weights measured in the millions of pounds. Today these anticipated payloads are beyond the limits of existing conventional equipment.
One solution to this problem is MOHATS, a Modular Overland Handling and Transport System that uses large pneumatic tires which were never expected to carry loads of this magnitude.
The MOHATS program has concluded that such a system, equipped with large pneumatic tires, is a feasible, practical, and optimum solution to the problem because it meets the requirements for maximum maneuverability while providing a degree of off-road capability.
