Abstract
Consumable electrode vacuum melting has been very effective in improving the mechanical properties of low alloy steels. This paper presents comparative mechanical properties for consumable electrode, vacuum melted, and air melted H-11 steel. In general, CEVM H-11 steel has greatly superior transverse ductility, higher notched tensile strength, and better uniformity in tensile properties than does air melted material. Also, the CEVM H-11 displays a significant improvement in both the unnotched and notched fatigue strength over air melted material.
