Abstract
This paper gives the case history of the successful application of PERT in a Process Research task that was urgent, required efficient coordination of highly qualified experts, and was allocated a very small budget.
The case was the welding research conducted to reduce the scrap rate in producing rims for passenger car wheels. The project objective was established as the measurement of electrical power, the duplication of which results in assurance of weld quality for flash butt welders in common use.
It was concluded that electrical power may be measured by the resulting plasticity of the metal and a welding schedule was demonstrated which reduced scrap rate from 3% to less than 1%.
