Abstract
The Bureau of Ships is actively engaged in a research and development program aimed at producing large ocean-going craft incorporating the air cushion vehicle principle. The SKMR-1, a 25 ton research hydroskimmer, is a significant part of this overall program.
The mission of the SKMR-1 is twofold: to provide a research and development craft capable of determining specification requirements for future designs, and to evaluate the concept for military use.
The SKMR-1 design is described in detail. The progress of the craft is traced through the production phase. Finally, the extensive Bureau of Ships trial and demonstration program is discussed.
