Abstract
The increasing demand for longer periods of service free operation of spark ignited internal combustion engines necessitates finding new ways to meet this demand. Five areas relating to the current ignition system, upon which this type of engine is dependent, are discussed. These include reliability, spark plug life, firing accuracy, voltage output, and cost. Taking these factors into consideration, initial tests indicate that a newly designed breakerless solid-state ignition system with condenser discharge circuit should be capable of continuous operation for a year or more without service.
