Abstract
This paper outlines the planning and implementation of a high-temperature fluid power facility at Republic Aviation Corp. It describes the facility's power generating equipment, which includes an hydraulic power pack and fluid heating unit (capable of delivering a fluid flow of 40 gpm at 500 F, or 10 gpm at 1000 F, at 5000 psi), a pneumatic compressor and heat pack (providing a 12 scfm air flow at 5000 psi and 1200 F), a large 1900 F oven with three individually controlled chambers, and several portable ovens with a 1500 F capability used to test high temperature systems. Safety precautions necessary for high temperature and pressure tests will be discussed, such as the explosion blowout hatches on all ovens and the roof of the facility and inert-gas atmospheres within the ovens during all high temperature testing. High-temperature test techniques will also be presented. Finally, Air Force sponsored programs recently completed or currently in progress will be indicated.
