Brake Performance as Related to Drum Design

Abstract
Proper selection of quality brake drum irons and carefully compounded lining materials can avoid premature drum failure and/or short liner life. Various brake tests are described and the following conclusions drawn: increase in peripheral speed offsets torque loss in smaller diameter drums; drum ribbing is beneficial during extended heat operation; generally, the heavier drum performs better; brake output increases and stability decreases as the drum section decreases; and balanced floating action improves performance.
