Abstract
A single-cylinder laboratory engine test for evaluating “light-duty” deposit forming characteristics of motor oils is described. This laboratory test is shown to reliably indicate oil performance in passenger cars. The design of the test is based on knowledge of the mechanism of deposit formation in combination with studies of the influence of engine operating variables. This test is not the only one that could be evolved. However, it is relatively simple and of reasonable duration and uses a small oil charge engine available in most petroleum laboratories.
