Abstract
THIS PAPER has been prepared primarily for the aircraft equipment design engineer who has little or no experience in the field of radiation damage. It represents an effort on the part of the author to acquaint these people with the problems of operating aircraft equipment in the radiation environment of a nuclear-powered aircraft and to indicate the studies being performed in an effort to produce radiation-resistant aircraft subsystems.
Some basic considerations of the radiation environment and its interaction with matter are given, followed by a general discussion of radiation effects on and resultant damage to aircraft materials and accessories. Also discussed are the studies required and being conducted to render solutions to the problems of operating equipment in this radiation environment.*
