Abstract
Foreword
Automotive Crash Injury Research is sponsored by the Commission on Accidental Trauma of the Armed Forces Epidemiological Board and supported by funds provided by the Surgeon General, Department of the Army, under Research Contract No. DA-49-007-MD-483, 0i No. 14-53. Funds for the project are also furnished by the National Institutes of Health of the U.S. Public Health Service, and additional grants for expansion have been received from the Ford Motor Company and the Chrysler Corporation.
The data analyzed for this report were collected through a cooperative interstate effort involving twelve states and one city. At the present time the data collecting program is being conducted in sixteen states, and three cities are scheduled to joint the cooperative effort. Automotive Crash Injury Research wishes to make grateful acknowledgment to the physicians, public health authorities, police officials and personnel of the states of North Carolina, Maryland, Indiana, Connecticut, the Commonwealth of Virginia, Arizona, Texas, Vermont, California, Minnesota, New York, Pennsylvania, and the City of Minneapolis. Their excellent medical and accident reporting and photography have contributed immeasurably to the vital and humane cause of crash injury prevention in America.
The assistance given by Robert M. Tracy, Supervisor, and Myron I. Macht, Assistant Supervisor, of Automotive Crash Injury Research Field Operations is gratefully acknowledged.
