Analysis of the Bore Distortion Effect on Friction and Oil Behavior Using a Coupled Simulation Model of Piston Ring Dynamics and Lubrication

A coupled simulation model of top ring 3D dynamics and lubrication has been developed, which makes it possible to analyze dynamic behavior of the ring sliding on a distorted cylinder bore. Using this simulation, following results were predicted and these tendencies were verified experimentally; i) the ring-groove friction has an effect on the ring-bore friction loss in the case of a tapered cylinder bore assuming a thermal deformation. ii) total amount of oil remained on the 4th-order circumferentially distorted cylinder bore is more than that on the second-order distorted cylinder bore.
