Abstract
It is well known, that the FlexRay protocol implementation vendors and integrators verify their products by in-house tests. To apply a common and unified testing standard, the official FlexRay protocol conformance tests cover the functional correctness and adherence of an implementation to the FlexRay protocol standard.
With the definition of conformance tests for the most recent FlexRay Protocol version 3.0, the amount of test scenarios increased significantly, compared to FlexRay version 2.1. In addition, different types of test implementations - with or without actual hardware under test - can apply. Nevertheless, due to the nature of conformance tests, there are still well-known potential fault areas or sources the conformance test does not cover - while their coverage can significantly improve the reliability and interoperability from a systems point of view.
This paper shows up useful and applicable testing areas beside the pure conformance test, especially with respect to robustness and interoperability of FlexRay protocol implementations. They cover known effects within any network, but also critical aspects of the FlexRay protocol itself. Rather small add-ons can increase the gained test coverage significantly, and therefore provide a better reliability, robustness, and chance of interoperability of devices passing such tests. Also the test system architecture and implementation approach using commercial of-the-shelf devices is presented.
