Development of Electric Power Control Using a Capacitor Characteristic of a Fuel Cell

Cold operation was a major issue for fuel cell vehicles. Rapid warm-up operation based on the concentration overvoltage increase and the conversion efficiency decrease caused by limitation of oxygen or hydrogen supply was adapted to a fuel cell hybrid vehicle which is running. In order to improve power response of a fuel cell to target power of the vehicle, an inner capacitor characteristic of a fuel cell based on oxidation-reduction reaction and electric double layer capacitor was measured and an equivalent electric circuit model of a fuel cell with the capacitor was constructed. Including this equivalent electric circuit model, the power control algorithm absorbed power deviation by the capacitor was composed. It has been confirmed that the rapid warm-up operation using this power control can represent reasonably well the power response and warm-up performance and was applied to Toyota FCHV-adv released in June 2008.
