Development of GDC Cell for Simultaneous Reduction of NOx and PM~Comprehensive Technological Development of Innovative, Next-Generation, Low-Pollution Vehicles

Electrochemical reduction (ECR) method of PM and NOx in a diesel exhaust has been developed. In this method, gas permeable electrochemical cell, having a porous solid oxide electrolyte, is used to enable the PM filtering on the anode. On the cathode, alkaline earth metal is coated for NOx storage. Due to the forced flow of oxygen ion from cathode to anode (oxygen pumping) simultaneous reductions of PM and NOx are performed by applying the voltage to both electrodes. The GDC cell having a lower operation temperature than YSZ cell has been developed and evaluated. The GDC cell enables to decompose NOx and PM at the temperatures higher than 300°C, and absorb NOx at the temperatures between 100 and 300°C.
