Abstract
Research has undertaken to develop CVT pulleys using a new type
of alloy steel and high temperature vacuum carburizing.
Vacuum carburizing confers higher fatigue strength and less
carburizing time than conventional gas carburization. This is
because of non-oxidation atmosphere and higher heat treatment
temperature (>1000°C).
Such a technology, however, requires alloy modification to
prevent abnormal grain coarsening during high temperature
processing and to maximize fatigue performance. Addition of Nb and
V played significant role in stabilization of microstructure at
high temperature. Also, the amount of Si was increased to maximize
fatigue properties under the vacuum carburizing condition.
Successful durability test results and reduction of processing
time were achieved using the new alloy steel and the high
temperature process.
