Assessment on the Impacts of the 3% Ethanol Gasoline Fuel Blend on Passenger Cars and Motorcycles in Taiwan

Abstract
In this paper, the comparison test program for testing vehicles using straight gasoline and E3 ethanol blended fuel is overviewed. The test procedures and driving cycles were described and the regulated hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), oxides of nitrogen (NOx), unregulated formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and acetone emissions were measured and statistically analyzed. The comparisons between using straight gasoline and E3 ethanol were analyzed. For passenger cars, the average CO and NMHC (non-methane hydrocarbons) emissions using E3 ethanol were reduced while the NOx emission was varied with the tested vehicle models. For motorcycles using E3 ethanol, the average CO emission was reduced while the THC (total hydrocarbons) and NOx emissions were varied with the tested motorcycle types.
