Characterization and Evaluation of Frontal Crash Pulses with Respect to Occupant Safety
Published December 01, 2008 by Fraunhofer Institut Chemische Technologie in Germany
Event: Airbag 2008
Crash pulse characterization is of great importance in many fields of occupant restraint system development. The purpose of this investigation is firstly to define a suitable criterion for the characterization of crash pulses that allows a comparison of pulse 'severity.' Secondly, threshold values for the new pulse criterion are identified that give an indication for restraint component selection. The presented criterion can help vehicle manufacturers and safety suppliers to develop a decision matrix for the necessary vehicle equipment based on minimal vehicle information and given performance targets.
