Abstract
The number of fatalities and severe injuries on German roads has
further decreased over the past few years to just beneath 5,000 in
2007. This is the first time since 1953 when accident statistic
started. Unfortunately, this positive development is not
encountered everywhere. In the USA, for instance, the number of
road fatalities has remained almost constant over the past few
years at more than 40,000 annually. One reason for this is that
even today, a very large proportion of fatalities were not wearing
seat belts.
This brief digression into accident statistics shows that much
still remains to be done to promote and improve vehicle safety.
