We conducted experiments to investigate i) the relationship between the amount of hierarchical menu information in a human-machine interface (HMI) and its recognition-judgment performance and ii) the relationship between the notation method, such as letters and icons, and the performance of a user in recognizing the information on the HMI and then operating the HMI. We report the experimental results and discuss findings that are useful for designing a hierarchical menu.
