A New Homogenization Method for FEM Dynamic Simulation of Composite Sandwich Materials

Although not yet widely diffused, composite sandwiches have already made their first steps in the automotive industry for their interesting stiffness-to-weight ratio, and material and processing cost. While the efficient FE simulation of standard solid and fluid materials in automotive applications is nowadays quite well assessed, the FE simulation of composite honeycomb sandwich structures still needs to be improved.
It is necessary to have a method compatible with standard FE codes used in vehicle NVH development, and able to support the design phase in a predictive way. In this paper a new methodology fulfilling these needs is presented.
