Study on the Improvement of Steering Maneuverability of Electric Power Steering~Proposal of Control Logic for Improvement of Steering Feeling at Returning Wheel Operation

In conventional EPS systems, the returning characteristics of steering wheel is not necessary satisfactory, especially at low and medium speed, because the self-aligning torque from road becomes not to overcome the sum of the friction torque on tire and the damping torque caused by counter electro-motive force. This paper proposes new control logic for improvement of steering feeling at returning wheel operation. The main functions of the proposed control logic are the following two; reduction in steering torque at returning wheel operation and improvement of return to center performance at steering wheel release handling. The availability of the proposed control strategy was verified by both the bench tests and experiments performed on the test vehicle.
