Abstract
The forging of magnesium is still restricted to a few companies that operate in niche markets such as specialty wheels and aerospace parts. The main requirement for industrial applications is to provide tailored and cost-effective technologies and feedstock for the industrial manufacture of forged magnesium components. In this work, high strength commercial AZ91 and ZK60 magnesium alloys with different heat treatments (T5 and T6) were forged in order to investigate their potential for use as chassis components. The results show that die forging of magnesium alloys offers the possibility to produce high quality parts with complex geometries similar to aluminum alloy forgings.
