Study on Method of Estimation of Anti-Oxidation Performance for Engine Oil Deterioration Monitoring System

The research discussed in this paper demonstrated the existence of a strong correlation between the anti-oxidation performance of engine oil and the production of sludge. Analysis of the deterioration mode of anti-oxidation performance in unit tests and engine bench tests of engine oil indicated that the reaction mechanisms causing engine oil deterioration could be approximated by the superpositioning of zero- and first-order reactions. The results of these tests also demonstrated that heat, air, NOx and unburnt fuel are major factors in the deterioration of anti-oxidation performance. Detailed analysis resulted in the proposal of a general formula for the deterioration of oil anti-oxidation performance, which enabled the degree of deterioration to be estimated.
Actual vehicle tests showed that the use of the formula enabled accurate estimation of the deterioration rate of anti-oxidation perforamnce, indicating that the method has potential for onboard use.
