The combustion mode switching from SI to HCCI combustion is essential for practical use of the HCCI engine, especially, in the case of HCCI with internal EGR. The combustion mode switching was examined by cam profile switching from the valve overlap cam profile to the negative valve overlap cam profile. Finally, the combustion mode switching from SI to HCCI was demonstrated by switching the cam profile without any misfires and with an acceptable combustion noise level by controlling the throttle valve, fuel control valve, and exhaust valve closed timing, intake valve opening timing.
