Cooling System Optimization on a 5-Cylinder Engine

Abstract
The main function of a cooling system is to maintain a suitable working temperature for the engine and transmission i.e. to keep the engine from overheating by transferring heat to air. A simple cooling system consists of radiator, water pump, hoses, fan, shroud, thermostat, water jackets and passages in cylinder head and block through which coolant circulates. Two level of cooling systems and their effects on a light duty diesel engine, developed at Ford Otosan, will be optimized and compared to obtain the sufficient flow and pressure on the cooling circuit. The System Design Specification (SDS) requirements for flow & pressure of cooling system parts will be determined. Flowmaster models on 5-cylinder engine will be updated and validated before the verification with cooling rig tests performed at Ford Otosan. With this verified model, it will be possible to analyze different scenarios without prototype cost and lead times.
