Abstract
The use of wireform components to route and support brake cable systems is quite common. Though easy to form and economical to manufacture, there are drawbacks to using wireforms. When cyclic loading is extreme, a wireform's capability becomes limited. A common failure associated with these designs is fatigue due to vehicle vibrations. Therefore, it is important to understand the dynamics associated with a wireform support under such conditions. This paper will review different mathematical design techniques that will be helpful in designing a wireform component. Comparisons will be made between theoretical calculations for fatigue, finite element analysis (FEA) results, vibration testing, directional loading, and material selection.
