Development of Prediction Method for Vehicle Exterior Noise Level Using Sound Power Level of an Engine

In reducing engine noise in an engine test cell, it is advantageous if the vehicle exterior noise level due to the engine noise can be predicted before it is mounted in a vehicle. A simple technique using the sound power level of an engine in a test cell and the acoustic transfer functions which are measured between the noise evaluation point and the engine surfaces in a vehicle to predict the vehicle exterior noise has been developed. This paper explains the technique of predicting vehicle exterior noise level based on engine test cell measurements.
