An Experimental Study on Diesel Fuel Property Effects on Ignition Delay Characteristics

Abstract
Effects of fuel compositions and cetane number on ignition delay characteristics were investigated. A rapid compression and expansion machine equipped with a high-pressure injection system was used to reproduce diesel ignition and combustion. An empirical formula has been developed taking into account the physical delay factors and cetane numbers by comparing with measured delay characteristics. Visualizing combustion processes showed the luminous flame occurrence influenced by cetane numbers.
