Development of Quantitative Evaluation Method of Acceleration Shock in Motorcycles

Abstract
For the purpose of improving the driveability of motorcycles, we have been developing a quantitative system for rider evaluation. The feeling of acceleration is one of the key evaluation items and we tackled the task of gauging the feeling of acceleration. When we measured the longitudinal acceleration of the vehicle body and the output shaft torque in order to gauge acceleration shock, we found that the test rider's evaluation of acceleration shock matched the peak values of longitudinal acceleration. We attempted to evaluate acceleration shock through not only riding tests but also chassis dynamometer tests. We measured the output shaft torque in order to grasp the relationship between the longitudinal acceleration peak values in the chassis dynamometer tests and the riding tests. By measuring longitudinal acceleration in the chassis dynamometer tests and riding tests when the output shaft torque peak value was the same, we discovered that the longitudinal acceleration peak value was lower in the chassis dynamometer test than in the riding test, which allowed us to grasp the relationship between the two sets of test data. This in turn made it possible to predict the longitudinal acceleration peak value and the rider's evaluation in riding tests based on chassis dynamometer test results. The results of this study made it possible to speed up the development process for enhancing the feeling of acceleration.
