Abstract
The twin objectives of meeting stringent emission norms and overcoming the energy crisis have increased focus on research into use of cleaner alternate fuels. Hydrogen IC engine technology, with renewable hydrogen fuelling it, has made considerable progress over the past two decades. Researchers and industries have directed their efforts towards hydrogen energy production, storage and combustion. The stepping-stone is to opt for the appropriate induction system, as it affects the engine's performance, safety, emission and fuel economy.
This paper comprehensively reports the various technologies that have been used over the years for inducting hydrogen into the combustion chamber of the IC engine. The principles behind these technologies, their advantages and their drawbacks have been elaborated. An effort has been made to develop a “Hydrogen Induction Methodologies Matrix”.
The basic intent of this matrix is to ease out the process of induction scheme selection for hydrogen engine builders. The technologies of carburetion, manifold/port injection and direct injection have been evaluated on the basis of application, cost, the mode of operation, power, torque and emission standards amongst other parameters. Such consolidation will prevent reinvention of the wheel and pave the path for faster commercialization of zero-emission vehicles.
