Effect of Control Methods for Generator on Fuel Consumption of Series HEV~Examination by Use of Numerical Simulation

Control methods of a generator of series hybrid electric vehicle (SHEV) have been evaluated to improve fuel consumption of HEV. A method of generation at constant power and a method of generation with proportion to load are adopted as a control method of the generator for SHEV. The evaluation results show that, the optimum control method for the generator exists depending on the vehicle usage and the vehicle average speed. The optimum combination of the two control methods has a high potential to improve fuel consumption in SHEV with small reserve power such as heavy-duty city bus.
