Abstract
The development of cylinder-head gaskets over the last ten years has mainly been characterized by adapting multi-layer metal technology to meet the highly diverse, steadily rising standards of modern high-performance engines. The modular design of the sealing system - with coating, beads and stoppers as the functional elements - allows for precise adjustments to the specific technical requirements of the engine.
With new sealing and production technologies, gasket manufacturer has managed to achieve more cost-efficient solutions together with improved performance. One big step in this direction was made by developing innovative coined stoppers, the serpentine stopper for spring steel layers and the honeycomb stopper for layers made of cold rolled steel.
Beside cost advantages, a wide range of additional technical benefits can be realized. With topographic stopper designs and topographic supporting elements, the gasket design can be adjusted ideally to the engine structure's stiffness.
These two types of coined stoppers have been integrated in each type of multi layer steel (MLS) gasket regardless the number of layers or gasket thickness. The concept has been tested, released and is in mass production with high power gasoline and diesel engines.
