Calibration of Automatic Transmission Control Systems

The paper presents an investigation into the applicability of system modelling in the control system shift schedule calibration process for a discrete ratio automatic transmission. A powertrain system model, developed to predict the effect of shift schedule calibration on vehicle performance, fuel economy, and shift consistency and busyness, is described. Results of a back-to-back comparison between the traditional, prototype-based shift schedule calibration process and a model-based process, centered on the use of the powertrain system model, are presented. Key conclusions arising from the comparison exercise are discussed.
