Abstract
The more stringent upcoming world-wide emission legislation for recreational products has driven engine development towards concepts based on electronic controlled fuel injection rather than the use of carburettors.
This paper describes the specific requirements placed on a standardised engine management system (EMS) for Rotax engines. The Rotax engine line-up for personal watercraft, snowmobiles, all terrain vehicles, scooters and motorcycles place numerous demands on the EMS.
The strategy adopted to overcome the conflict between high power output on one side and emission legislation on the other side is presented.
Driven by this challenge, an advanced automotive EMS was adapted to the specific demands, thus the different environmental conditions, modified control algorithm, and specific functional description to the base system are described.
