Abstract
Motorcycles are becoming increasingly popular in the Indian two wheeler market. Tough competition in the segment has resulted in, the manufacturers coming up with various features to attract more customers towards their product. Usage of Multi Focal Reflectors (MFR) for headlamp and light signalling devices is one of such attractive quality features in the products. It is possible to have attractive shapes and light patterns from signalling devices with MFR. These patterns attract the prospective customers at first sight itself. The effectiveness of the reflected light from such devices is presently evaluated subjectively which is leading to longer lead-time for development. This present study establishes a methodology to evaluate objectively, the effectiveness of the reflected light from a signalling device. This is to verify whether the design intended pattern is achieved on the actual component. The effectiveness of the reflected light is measured in terms of area of illumination and the light intensity using video photometry and image analysis techniques. The results are compared with the subjective evaluation and found to be matching well. This has helped in reducing the subjectivity in evaluation and has reduced time for the product development.
