Abstract
A simulation package capable of predicting the complete system dynamic behavior regarding steering feel issues and vibration problem of an electric power steering (EPS) system at the design stage is developed using the software MATLAB/Simulink. A pinion-assist type of EPS is taken as an object of this study. In this paper, emphasis is placed on the physical elucidation of generation mechanism of a self- excited vibration, known as "judder," and the optimum design of phase compensator for stabilizing the system dynamics. The validity of this simulation analysis is verified by comparing with the experimental results performed on both the bench test apparatus and vehicle prototype.
