Abstract
There are a growing number of opportunities for LEDs in the field of automotive exterior lighting. This is primarily due to advancements in brightness and color options of LEDs. Though the properties of LEDs introduce new requirements in lamp assembly modules, stylists are able to be more flexible in their concepts. These applications must take into account many interacting factors that impact tail lamp performance. Examples are color, luminous intensity versus viewing angle, thermal management, and appearance. High Flux surface mount (SMT) LEDs make three-dimensional RCL (Rear Combination Lamp) solutions possible. But what is the most suitable mounting substrate for the LEDs? Considerations should allow stylists as much freedom as possible while meeting performance requirements. Multiple options are available including Flexible Printed Circuit bonded to Aluminum, Printed Circuit Board (FR4) and Insulated Metal Substrates. This paper will highlight the advantages and performance characteristics of flexible printed circuit on aluminum for SMT LED technology. Comparisons will be made on electrical and thermal performance, cost, and ease of manufacturing.
