Formation of Diesel Nanoparticles (Second Report)-Effect of Sulfate on Nanoparticle Formation

The effect of sulfate (SO3) on nanoparticle formation was examined by using three diesel fuels with different sulfur content. Sulfate in an exhaust pipe formed nanoparticles by the interaction with water in dilution process to the atmosphere, and the number concentration and the size distribution of nanoparticles strongly depended on the fuel sulfur level, the number concentration of soot particles, and the nature of the dilution process to the atmosphere. Moreover, the fuel sulfur level for the suppression of nanoparticles was discussed.
