Abstract
An active remote dynamic absorber (ARDA) is proposed for the vibration suppression of beams. The technique is an extension of the remote dynamic absorber method (RDA) that has been proposed recently. Both techniques (RDA and ARDA) are remote. That is, no direct attachment of the dynamic absorber beam to the primary beam is needed. In the RDA technique, the RDA beam is electromechanically coupled to the primary beam via piezoelectric elements. The technique is purely passive, however, it has a very narrow effective frequency range of operation, which limits its practicability. Though most passive dynamic absorber techniques are narrowband, the RDA is too narrowband to be practical. In the ARDA technique, the electric signals emanating from the RDA to the primary beam and vise versa are amplified, which widens the effective frequency range of operation and renders the technique active. In this work, the fundamental working principle of the ARDA technique is presented using two-degree-of-freedom lumped systems. And a thorough investigation of the technique, using the finite element, method, is presented.
