Development of a Flame Propagation Model for Stratified Combustion

The aim of this study was to develop a three-dimensional simulation technique for stratified charge combustion in a direct-injection gasoline engine. A flame propagation model applicable to an inhomogeneous mixture has been developed by applying an improved coherent flamelet model (CFM). The calculation results were compared with experimental measurements made in a constant-volume chamber. Good agreement was seen between the two sets of data for flame propagation and heat release under various conditions.
