Abstract
Greater emphasis is being placed on improving the ride characteristics of medium duty vehicles as shown by the increased use of taper leaf springs with lower spring rates. This trend in suspension design is creating a greater awareness of the phenomenon known as cab shake. This paper describes the extensive investigation carried out, both in the UK and the US, in the last 20 years to address cab shake. The paper discusses the contributing vehicle characteristics that are involved, as well as the various methods to alleviate the effect of shake on the cab's occupants. The work has culminated in a cab mount system that incorporates Hystec mountings that use hysteretic damping, developed by the Lord Corporation, offering a more cost-effective solution for both OEM fitment and field service complaints, than fully suspended cabs. This new cab mounting is being offered on the new 2003 Chevrolet Kodiak and GMC TopKick vehicles.
